Bronze Sculpture of Two Basset Hounds by Emmanuel Frémiet, Master of 19th-Century French Animalier Sculpture This work depicts the two favourite Basset Hounds of Napoleon III, named Ravageot and Ravageole respectively. Drawing inspiration from the pair of hounds, Frémiet created one of the iconic subjects of the 19th-century French Animalier school. The master precisely captured the defining traits of Basset Hounds: their floppy drooping ears, stocky build and docile, loyal temperament. The two hounds lean closely against one another in a heartwarming, charming pose. Cast in bronze with meticulous detailing, the textures of fur and musculature are sharply rendered. The sculptor’s signature E. FREMIET is cast onto the base of the piece. Frémiet ranks among the most influential French animal sculptors of the 19th century, and he was also the nephew of renowned sculptor François Rude. This dual-hound bronze stands as a representative small-scale work by the artist, as well as a distinguished classical European hunting-themed sculpture boasting exceptional aesthetic appeal and collectible value. The piece survives in excellent original condition, bearing only natural signs of age consistent with its period.
