Description
L:34cm H:36cm This painted pottery equestrian warrior figurine of Han Dynasty is molded in separate parts then assembled, without base, decorated with red, yellow and blue mineral pigments on plain clay body.The warrior has wrapped hair, distinct carved eyebrows and beard, wearing cross-collar short robe edged with red paint. His hollow hands originally held a weapon (now lost), seated astride the horse. The horse boasts robust body and slender limbs with raised head, its body painted with cloud and saddle patterns in red, yellow and blue, rendered in simple bold lines embodying the grand vigorous sculptural aesthetic of Han Dynasty.Equestrian figurines of Han served as burial wares representing the deceased??s cavalry guard, reflecting the martial culture and lavish burial customs of the era. Painted with natural mineral pigments, the patterns and colors remain distinguishable after millennia of soil corrosion, making it a vital artifact for researching Han military attire, costume and sculptural art.
