Signed (lower right) Signed (lower left and reverse) ZAO WOU-KI (1920–2013)Chinese-French master of lyrical abstraction. Born in Beijing in 1920, Zao studied at the National Hangzhou Art Academy under Lin Fengmian. He relocated to Paris in 1948, becoming a vital member of the École de Paris. Zao unified modern Western abstract painting with the spirit of Chinese calligraphy and landscape aesthetics. His creative journey spans the Oracle Bone Period, Hurricane Period and mature Unbounded Period. Through colour and calligraphic brushwork, he built ethereal, boundless pictorial space embodying the Oriental philosophy of vital energy. He received the Praemium Imperiale, was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and awarded Grand Officier of the Légion d’Honneur. His works are held in major collections worldwide, including Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate Modern.
