All figures are dressed in magnificent formal attire, exuding innate noble demeanour. Intriguingly to modern viewers, an elderly nobleman holds a bouquet of flowers, posing as a youthful suitor to court a young noble maiden in her bloom. The elderly lord’s ingratiating manner, the maiden’s reluctance, and the gentle persuasion of her female companion are all vividly conveyed within the composition.Such mismatched aristocratic marriages were arranged to consolidate family wealth and social prestige, as cross-class unions were not permitted within the European nobility system.The painter adopts a rigorous and balanced compositional structure. The figure lines embody the classical grace of Ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. The palette is fresh, bright and sumptuous. The artist achieves perfect portrayal of the figures’ physical demeanour and inner psychology.
