Set upon a brass base, it is inlaid with brilliantly coloured floral motifs meticulously assembled by Italian micro mosaic artisans using tiny glass mosaic tesserae, showcasing superb craftsmanship.At the centre of the cross is an inset portrait of Pope Pius XI, photographed in 1925 during the Catholic Holy Year. The piece bears subtle signs of age and gentle wear over time, with only negligible minor imperfections.A Holy Year is a major religious ceremony presided over by the Pope, the earthly representative of God, for the canonization of saints. It honours devout believers who have made extraordinary contributions to humanity by elevating them to sainthood, entitling them to veneration and devotion from followers. Holy Years are celebrated at intervals of twenty-five, fifty, or one hundred years, with the cycle determined by the Pope as the vicar of Christ on Earth.Micro mosaic jewellery originated in the Papal States of Vatican City in the mid?18th century. Initially created as high?end bespoke souvenirs for European nobility travelling to Rome, such pieces were mounted on precious metal bases including gold, silver and brass. Artisans painstakingly cut specially fired opaque coloured glass strips into minute tesserae, assembling intricate depictions of Roman churches, religious figures, landscapes, flowers and small animals. Precious stone fragments such as lapis lazuli and malachite were also occasionally used for inlay work. The most renowned micro mosaic ateliers were concentrated in Rome and Venice.The crown and jewellery worn by Marie Louise of Austria, Napoleon’s second wife, upon their marriage were custom micro mosaic pieces commissioned from Rome. By contrast, the regalia and jewellery of Napoleon’s first wife Joséphine de Beauharnais were bespoke Italian cameo shell carvings.
