Richly embellished with extensive 24K gilded detailing across the body, it features two reserved painted panels depicting romantic courtship scenes of ladies and gentlemen in the manner of the French Rococo master Antoine Watteau, complete with the artist’s signature. The vase is further adorned with Greco-Roman vase motifs encircled by sacred mythical birds.Founded in Vienna in 1718, the Vienna Royal Porcelain Manufactory was established by Sir Claudius Innocentius du Paquier (1679–1751), a Dutch master porcelain craftsman formerly of Meissen, appointed directly by Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor (1685–1740). It ranks as the second-oldest high-end hard-paste porcelain manufactory dedicated exclusively to European royal use, preceded only by Germany’s Royal Meissen Porcelain Manufactory.In its early years, the manufactory primarily emulated and studied Meissen porcelain, with works celebrated for opulent Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles. In its middle and later periods, it developed a distinctive artistic identity whose luxury and refinement eventually surpassed Meissen. Highly coveted by European royalty and nobility, Vienna porcelain represents the pinnacle of imperial opulence.The base hallmark derives from the coat of arms shield of the Austrian Archduke. Variations in the shape and colour of the marks serve as key references for dating production. Vienna Royal Porcelain also served as the formative inspiration for Hungary’s Herend Royal Porcelain.On 13 March 1923, the manufactory relocated to Augarten Palace in Vienna. Following Austria’s transition to a republic after World War I, it was officially renamed Augarten Wien Austria.From March 1938 to April 1945, Austria was occupied by Germany and lost territorial sovereignty. Porcelain produced during this special period bears the marking GERMANY in various typefaces.
