Within the aristocratic hunting preserve, noble hounds scout ahead and track prey. Gentlemen in red?and?white hunting livery follow closely atop fine steeds, while elegant ladies dressed in black hunting attire ride alongside with graceful poise.The artist adopts a Romantic painting style to depict the bright, clear sky and rustling woods, alongside hunters, fine hounds and horses. His technique hovers between Realism and Impressionism, with masterful command of light, shadow and spatial depth. He excels at balancing the proportions of grand panoramic composition and delicate fine details.Background of Fox HuntingFox hunting is Britain’s oldest royal and aristocratic hunting tradition. Each autumn, members of the nobility would gather for collective fox hunts, savouring the thrill of the chase. According to British fox?hunting scholar Jane Ridley, the systematic training of hounds for fox hunting began around 1660. The earliest formal fox hunt in England was established by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, who founded the first hunting ground in Yorkshire.As cunning foxes damaged farm crops and livestock, fox hunting was regarded as an effective means of pest control. It rose to widespread popularity during the Stuart era, favoured for “the pleasure of rural leisure, aristocratic prestige, the excitement of the chase, the heroic sentiment of protecting villagers from pests, and fleeting romantic encounters with local country maidens”. Fox hunting thus became an enduring and irresistible tradition of the British upper class.Artist BiographyPaolo Sala (1859–1924) was a celebrated Italian painter born and deceased in Milan on January 24, 1859, and December 24, 1924 respectively. He was a leading Milanese Academic painter active from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, renowned for large?scale historical scenes, architectural landscapes, genre subjects and animal portraits in both oil and watercolour.A graduate of the prestigious Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, he received rigorous classical artistic training and studied architecture under Camillo Boito (1836–1914), the distinguished mid?19th?century Italian architect.An avid traveller, Sala journeyed extensively across Britain, the Netherlands, Russia, as well as the United States and Argentina in the New World. He passionately captured his travel observations and landscapes on canvas with remarkable vividness.Throughout his career, he exhibited widely at major art shows across Italy and internationally, earning numerous awards. Most of his works are held in national museums across Italy, Russia and Britain, while a small number have entered private collections through premier international auction houses including Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
