19th Century Meissen Porcelain Group Figurine of Piper Shepherd with Flock of Sheep
Dimensions
A young shepherd wearing a tricorn hat leans against a withered tree playing a flute. Multiple goats (rams, ewes and lambs) surround the base, with wild flowers and foliage scattered across the ground.The theme derives from the popular Arcadian pastoral aesthetic prevalent across Europe in the 18th century, symbolizing the peaceful, leisurely idyllic life idealized by the nobility. The entire group is formed as an integrated molded composition refined by hand trimming, hand-painted with polychrome overglaze enamels.This type of group porcelain sculpture demands extraordinary craftsmanship. Delicate animal limbs, goat horns and tree branches are fragile structural elements prone to cracking and warping during firing, resulting in a low yield of finished pieces.
