Its shape and craftsmanship draw heavily on the famille rose porcelain of the Qing Dynasty imperial court of China.The set includes a lidded bowl with a matching saucer. The lid is adorned with a high-relief chrysanthemum knob, and both the knob and grape leaf garland ornaments are heavily decorated with thick gilding. The white porcelain glaze is painted with polychrome hundred-flower patterns hand-painted by Meissen master artisans. The base bears the classic antique hand-painted blue crossed swords mark.Founded in 1710 by Augustus the Strong of the Duchy of Saxony in Dresden, the Royal Meissen Porcelain Manufactory was relocated in the same year to Albrechtsburg Castle in Meissen to keep porcelain-making techniques strictly confidential.Early Meissen porcelain focused largely on imitating Chinese and Japanese wares, especially Japanese Imari and Kakiemon polychrome decorated porcelain, with craftsmanship so authentic it was almost indistinguishable from the originals. It was, however, its distinctive Rococo-style porcelain sculptures that secured Meissen’s reputation as Europe’s foremost porcelain center.Master craftsmen sculpted figures, flowers, birds and beasts from fine kaolin, then glazed them in rich varied hues.
