Signed (lower right) Monet employs light, hazy brushwork to dissolve rigid boundaries between architecture and water. Veiled by Venice’s morning mist, shimmering reflections spread across the canal, blending tones of blue, lavender and soft orange. Rather than documenting architectural detail, he strives to depict ephemeral light diffused through humid air.The Venice series occupies an important place within the artist’s mature landscape oeuvre, embodying his lifelong investigation into atmosphere, water and colour.
