An exceedingly rare and luxurious figural timepiece of the French royal court series, it was crafted by Edmé?Philibert Guydamour, the exclusive clockmaker to King Louis XVI. His works regularly appear at Sotheby’s and Christie’s auctions, renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship.The gilt bronze case is sculpted with a tender scene from Greek mythology: the Goddess of Beauty Venus and her son Cupid playing gently with a small dog. The figures are modelled with extraordinary finesse and lifelike expressiveness.The white enamel dial features twelve black Arabic numerals, two key winding holes, and a pair of Louis XVI?style openwork brass fleur?de?lis hands.The white marble base is sourced from the prestigious Carrara marble quarries of Italy, elegantly inlaid with flowing garlands of gilt bronze laurel leaves and supported by tapered gilt bronze feet.
