The glaze presents a glossy glass-like finish. Elaborate Art Nouveau foliate and stem motifs painted in abundant gilding surround an oval portrait of an aristocratic maiden. The portrait bears the signature of the renowned Vienna porcelain painting master Geyer. The base is marked with Vienna’s underglaze blue shield hallmark, together with the gilded signature of porcelain master Die Erde.Established in Vienna, Austria in 1718, the Vienna Royal Porcelain Manufactory was founded by Sir Claudius Innocentius du Paquier (1679–1751), a Dutch master craftsman formerly of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, appointed directly by Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor (1685–1740).It ranks as the second-oldest high-end hard-paste porcelain manufactory exclusively serving European royal courts, only after the Royal Meissen Porcelain Manufactory of Germany, the oldest in Europe.In its early years, the factory primarily followed and imitated Meissen porcelain. Its early works were celebrated for opulent Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles. In the middle and later periods, it gradually developed its own distinctive artistic identity, surpassing Meissen in luxury and splendor, and becoming the most coveted premium porcelain among European royalty and nobility.The base shield mark derives from the heraldic shield of the Archduke of Austria. Variations in the shape and color of the hallmark serve as key references for dating production. Vienna Royal Porcelain also inspired the founding and artistic development of Herend Porcelain of the Hungarian Royal Court.On March 13, 1923, the manufactory relocated to Augarten Castle in Vienna. Following Austria’s transition to a republic after World War I, it was officially renamed Augarten Wien Austria.From March 1938 to April 1945, Austria was under German occupation and lost territorial sovereignty. Porcelain produced during this special period is marked with “GERMANY” in various typefaces.
