The Fine Art & Collectibles Sale
Lot 49:
Description
8 5/8 x 6 in (21.8 x 15.2 cm)
This is a highly desirable signed first edition of Truman Capote’s landmark non fiction novel, In Cold Blood, published by Random House, New York, in 1965. The book bears an elegant inscription in blue ink on the title page: "For Judi / from a friend / Truman Capote". The signature is clean and bold, showcasing Capote’s distinctive handwriting.
First editions of In Cold Blood are sought after for their cultural and literary significance. This particular copy includes the dust jacket, which remains intact though with typical edgewear and chipping to the spine ends and corners. The boards are sound, and the interior pages are clean, with the signed leaf well preserved. This presentation copy stands as a testament to Capote’s personal connection with readers and contemporaries, adding warmth to its already formidable collectibility.
In Cold Blood is widely regarded as the first "non fiction novel", and its influence spans generations of writers and filmmakers. Signed first editions, especially with personal inscriptions, are increasingly rare and command strong prices at auction. Comparable inscribed first editions have recently fetched between $6,000 and $12,000 depending on condition and provenance. Capote’s association with In Cold Blood, and its iconic status in American literature, make this a cornerstone piece for collectors of twentieth century American authors.
