Description
GERMAN SCHOOL, EARLY 19TH CENTURY – PORTRAIT OF A LADY.
Medium: Watercolor and gouache on paper, mounted in a gilt-bronze frame with handwritten inscription to the reverse.
Dimensions: 3 3/4 x 3 in. (9.6 x 7.5 cm).
Description:
A finely executed early 19th-century portrait miniature depicting a young lady with softly curled brown hair and delicate facial features. She is dressed in a pale gown adorned with a red-beaded necklace and a small diamond-shaped pendant, rendered with subtle shading and restrained color harmony. The portrait exemplifies the early Biedermeier aesthetic, characterized by simplicity and quiet elegance. The reverse bears a handwritten German note recording family lineage, suggesting the sitter’s identity and provenance.
Condition: Good overall; light foxing and minor creases to the paper, colors gently aged with a fine patina consistent with age.
