Description:
A striking antique brooch designed as a stylized flower, set with old rose-cut diamonds throughout and featuring a vivid green emerald at the center. The brooch is crafted in silver-topped gold, a typical 19th-century technique where diamonds are set in silver to enhance their brilliance, while the underlying structure is made of gold for durability. The petals and leaves are richly detailed with scrolling forms and fine openwork, each bead-set with glittering diamonds in various sizes. The central emerald is a cushion-shaped stone held in delicate prongs, contrasting beautifully with the dark patina of the silver and the sparkle of the diamonds. The reverse is finished with a gold pin fitting and hand-engraved floral motifs.
This brooch is a representative example of late 19th-century European high jewelry craftsmanship, possibly from the Victorian or early Belle epoque era. The silver-on-gold mounting technique, popular in this period, allowed jewelers to maximize the visual impact of diamonds before the invention of white gold or platinum settings. The naturalistic floral motif, with its elegant curvature and lifelike dimensionality, reflects the era’s fascination with botanical themes. The central emerald adds a vibrant focal point and suggests this piece may have been a custom commission or intended for a prominent occasion. Its size, material, and execution point to a jewel of distinction-likely owned by someone of high social standing.
