Description:
A finely struck French silver medal issued by the Societe d’Agriculture, Belles-Lettres, Sciences et Arts de Poitiers. The obverse features a crowned heraldic device at center, surmounted by a lion rampant and surrounded by a dotted circular band and beaded base, emblematic of academic and noble distinction. The reverse bears the engraved inscription in all caps: "SOCIeTe D’AGRICULTURE / BELLES-LETTRES / SCIENCES ET ARTS / DE POITIERS, " referring to the learned society of Poitiers, which fostered regional intellectual and agricultural advancements.
This medal reflects the 19th-century French tradition of honoring academic and scientific merit through decorative awards issued by regional scholarly institutions. The Societe de Poitiers was one of many provincial bodies promoting interdisciplinary progress in agriculture, arts, and letters during the post-Enlightenment period. Its modest size and precise engraving suggest it may have been awarded for individual distinction or membership. The lion motif and regal insignia underscore the medal’s ceremonial and authoritative intent.
