TANG DYNASTY DUNHUANG MANUSCRIPTS OF THE SUTRA OF BUDDHA EXPOUNDING AMITABHA
Dimensions
H:120cmW:25cm H:47 inW:10 inThis is a hand-copied Buddhist scroll fragment from the Dunhuang manuscripts, dating to the Tang or Five Dynasties period. Written in regular or running regular script (kaishu/xingshu) on aged hemp paper, it preserves portions of the Sutra of Amit??bha, a central text of Pure Land Buddhism translated by Kumarajiva in the Later Qin Dynasty. The manuscript features neat columnar layout, consistent ink tone, and traces of red ink annotations, reflecting the characteristics of medieval Buddhist scribal practice. It recounts the Buddha??s teaching of the Ultimate Bliss Land in the West, the boundless light and longevity of Amit??bha, and the path of rebirth through single-minded recitation of the Buddha??s name. As a valuable Dunhuang relic, it offers critical evidence for the study of Chinese Buddhism, Pure Land faith, calligraphy, and material culture during the Tang?CFive Dynasties era.
