Description

Name

BUDDHA STATUES OF QINGZHOU IN THE NORTHERN QI DYNASTY

Dimensions

H:105cm(41.34in) This is a gilded and painted sandstone standing statue of Sakyamuni Buddha from the Northern Qi/Sui Dynasty. Carved from sandstone, it is decorated with mineral pigments and partial gilding. The statue features a plump and serene face, neat snail-shell curls, and a robe in the "broad clothing and wide sash" style with flowing lines. The right hand is in the Abhaya Mudra (fearlessness gesture) and the left hand in the Varada Mudra (wish-granting gesture), standing barefoot on a lotus pedestal. Despite worn pigments and damaged gilding over a millennium, it retains the vivid artistic style of "slender bones and clear images" of Buddhist statues in the late Northern Dynasties, serving as a precious physical relic of the eastward spread and localization of Buddhist art in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, witnessing the integration of Silk Road civilizations and the peak of early Chinese Buddhist statuary.
