3RD CENTURY SLATE GANDHARA BODHISATTVA HEAD

H:53cm (20.87in) H:35cm (13.78in) Weight:33000g (72.75lb) This is a stone sculpture of a Bodhisattva head in Gandhara style, belonging to the Kushan Empire period (c. 2nd?C4th century CE) in ancient India, carved from black schist. The face features typical Greco-Hellenistic aesthetic traits?? a high nose, deep-set eyes, slender brows, and an elaborate wavy mustache. Aurna (the curl between the eyebrows) is marked on the forehead, and the hair and halo are exquisitely decorated. It is a classic masterpiece of Gandhara art, which combines Greek realistic style with Indian Buddhist iconography, witnessing the cultural exchange along the ancient Silk Road.
